October 1 & 2, 2004 8:00 p.m. at The Dairy Center for the Arts Performance Space in Boulder, Colorado.

art is why I get up in the morning
but my definition ends there – it doesn’t seem fair
that I am living for something I can’t even define
but there you are right there
in the mean time.

- Ani DiFranco

I have always been inspired by Ani. I first heard her music at age 14 and I felt empowered: as a woman, as a feminist, as a democrat, and as a human. The more I learned about her journey as an artist and as an activist (and the way she always keeps the two intertwined) the more I saw her as a role model in my own artist/activist journey. Not only does she sing about political issues, and human decency- she also sings about love and relationships, another facet of life that I hold very dear.

By creating an artistic tribute to a role model like Ani, we can become a part of her journey, and make her a part of ours. By exploring her work, and creating our own work inspired by it, we can find a little Ani in ourselves, and find our own process of combining art and activism, all the while valuing the human heart.
